Herbert Joseph Cribb, known as Joseph, was Eric Gill's first apprentice, serving his apprenticeship from 1906 until 1913. From then he continued to work with Gill as his most trusted assistant until Gill's death in 1940.

Joseph took over Gill's workshop at the Guild on Ditchling Common after Gill left for Capel in 1924 and worked there until his death in 1967.
